The Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) is the iconic shade tree of the American South, known for its massive spreading canopy, evergreen foliage, and centuries-long lifespan. A defining feature of San Antonio’s landscape, it provides year-round shade and timeless beauty. Alfaro Tree Sales has been growing and planting Live Oaks at our 40-acre Atascosa nursery since 1976.
Important: Live Oaks are susceptible to oak wilt, a deadly fungal disease that has killed thousands of trees across Central Texas. Prune only in mid-winter (January–February) and paint all wounds immediately. Consider planting oak wilt-resistant alternatives like the Monterrey Oak in high-risk areas.
