Mexican Sycamore

Fast Shade with Striking White Bark

The Mexican Sycamore (Platanus mexicana) is one of the fastest-growing shade trees available for San Antonio, reaching 50–70 feet with a broad canopy and stunning white exfoliating bark. More drought-tolerant and disease-resistant than the American Sycamore, it’s an excellent choice for quick shade. Alfaro Tree Sales grows Mexican Sycamores at our 40-acre Atascosa nursery.

Care After Planting

Watering

Deep water 2–3×/week during the first season. Moderate water needs even when established — they appreciate occasional deep soaking in summer.

Soil & Fertilizer

Adapts to most soil types including SA’s alkaline clay. Benefits from a balanced fertilizer in spring.

Pruning

Structural pruning when young to develop a strong framework. Prune in winter. Remove low-hanging limbs as the tree matures.

Best Planting Time

October through March for best results. Provide adequate space — these trees get large.

Moderately. They’re more drought-tolerant than American Sycamores but appreciate occasional deep watering during extreme summer heat.

Yes — their smooth, white exfoliating bark is one of their most beautiful features, especially striking in winter.

They shed large leaves in winter and bark flakes throughout the year. If you prefer a very tidy tree, consider a different species. Many people love the bark character.
