The Retama (Parkinsonia aculeata), also called Jerusalem Thorn, is a graceful native tree with airy, feathery foliage and clouds of bright yellow flowers in spring and summer. Extremely drought-tolerant and adapted to South Texas heat, it’s perfect for xeriscape and naturalistic landscapes. Alfaro Tree Sales grows Retamas at our 40-acre Atascosa nursery.
Retamas produce abundant clusters of bright yellow flowers from April through September, creating a stunning display. The flowers attract butterflies and native pollinators. Its open, feathery canopy provides filtered light shade.

Minimal once established. Water deeply every 2–3 weeks in the first season. After that, rainfall is generally sufficient.
Thrives in poor, dry soils — even caliche. Avoid rich, heavy soils. No fertilizer needed.
Remove lower branches for clearance and any dead wood. Can be pruned to a single trunk or left as a multi-stem. Best done in winter.
